Bui Ta Hoang Vu has been appointed director of the HCMC Department of Tourism while Nguyen Huu Viet has taken up the post of director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports.

HCMC chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong handed over the appointment decisions to Vu and Viet at a ceremony on September 22. Vu and Viet will assume the jobs for a five-year term.

Vu replaces his predecessor Van Thi Bach Tuyet, who has been assigned to work at the office of the National Assembly Deputies Delegation of HCMC.

Vu is former deputy Party chief and chairman of District 8 while Viet is former Party chief and chairman of the People’s Council of District 9.

Speaking at the ceremony, Phong said Vu and Viet are expected to help boost the development of the tourism and culture-sports sectors.

The culture-sports sector has problems that remain to be solved, Phong said, adding that HCMC used to gain outstanding achievements in sports but the city has not been able to do so over the past three years.

Phong said the tourism sector has a lot of growth potential but big investment is needed to unlock it.

Many private firms have shown interest in sports and tourism projects in HCMC, including the development of waterway tourism and Rach Chiec sports complex in District 2.
