Some sensing devices made by SHTP Labs



Technology experts attending a recent MEMS/Sensor forum in HCMC said that sensing devices play a very important role in the Internet of Things (IoT). MEMS can be found in nearly all electronic devices, while sensing technology is the platform for Smart Everything.

The development of IoT, demand for smart cities, and the current data boom are factors leading to an increase in the demand for MEMS/sensors globally and in Vietnam.

Tom Nguyen, CEO of DunAn Sensing, said that all ‘smart things’ depend on sensing devices and MEMS technology.

HCMC is considered a large market for MEMS/sensors as the municipal authorities are in the process of building a smart city. 

Vietnam is a large market with high demand for MEMS/sensors in hi-tech agriculture, automation, construction, healthcare and environmental management.

The high labor costs in China are believed to be one of the reasons that have prompted investors to shift to the Vietnamese market which has more competitive costs.

The pressure sensors of SHTP Labs is one of the sensing devices created and developed by Vietnamese. 

The sensor units have been installed at 15 flooding sites in HCMC to measure and send alerts about flooding. 

According to a representative of SHTP Labs, when floods or high tides occur, the system will automatically measure the water level and transmit data to a server. 

The data management software will give warnings about floods and suggest itineraries for local residents.

SHTP Labs recently signed a cooperation contract with Chienowa Vietnam and HeloLife on R&D and the commercialization of pressure sensors. 

Under a contract with HeloLife, the two sides will develop sensors for cars to be provided to automobile manufacturers in the US. 

The manufacturing of sensing devices by Vietnamese research units shows great potential for Vietnam to develop IoT. 

ICDREC and other microchip companies have created biometric sensors, pressure sensors, accelerometer sensors and RFID chips from which products have been developed such as electronic locks for container vehicles, electronic thermometers, blood pressure monitors, and devices for detecting biological agents.

The initial achievements have put Vietnam on the world’s IoT map.

Tom Nguyen of DunAn Sensing has been manufacturing sensors in China and is now promoting an investment project in Vietnam. 

He believes that investment in Vietnam will be more favorable because Vietnam and HCMC are encouraging investment with big incentives.
