The pictures that are expected to cover over 50% of cigarette packs from May 1. |
This is one of the important contents of the Law on Prevention and Control of Harmful Effects of Tobacco that will take effect on May 1.
Cigarette causes severe health consequences for smokers. According to Dr. Tran Van Thuan, deputy director of the Hanoi-based Central Cancer Hospital, Director of the Institute for Cancer Prevention, smoking accounts for over 30% of the causes of cancer in humans.
To reduce the rate of smoking and the harmful effect of tobacco is the goal of the tobacco-related policies of Vietnam, with the Law on Prevention of Harmful Effect of Tobacco as the most important.
Under this law, health warnings in images must cover 50% of the packs and cartons of cigarette, both the front and back sides.
Six pictures will be printed simultaneously to attract the attention of the smokers and to raise awareness of people about the different harmful effects of tobacco. These images are impressive because they clearly show the serious consequences of smoking.
The warnings by pictures on cigarette packs have been used in 63 countries worldwide from 2001. At least 47 countries specify that the area of the health warnings by pictures must cover at least 50% of the area of the front and back of the cigarette packs and 18 countries request the warning area of over 50%.
In Vietnam, the current warnings on tobacco packaging is considered "too mild" because the lines "Smoking causes lung cancer" and "Smoking can cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease" account for only 30% of the area at the bottom of the cigarette packs.
