Rainfall across Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam’s southern provinces is expected to increase markedly on October 15 under the influence of an upper-level easterly disturbance, according to Kieu Thi Thuy, a forecaster at the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station.
In an update issued around midday, Thuy said convective clouds had developed rapidly, bringing showers to the city and surrounding areas. These clouds were forecast to continue building through the afternoon and evening, spreading showers and thunderstorms across much of southern Vietnam.
Many areas could see heavy rain, with very heavy downpours in isolated locations. Residents were advised to follow weather forecasts and warnings so they could prepare for changing conditions.
At 1pm, the station reported that rain was already spreading across Ho Chi Minh City, with heavy downpours in numerous locations. It warned of intense lightning accompanying the thunderstorms.
Widespread rain to continue through October 18
Looking ahead, Thuy said the upper-level easterly disturbance would continue to strengthen, affecting Ho Chi Minh City and the wider southern region.
Widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast from October 16 to 18. Heavy rain is expected in many areas, with isolated locations facing very heavy downpours.
Rain will fall mainly in the afternoon and evening, although it may arrive earlier in some places. Thunderstorms could bring whirlwinds, lightning and strong gusts, posing risks to people and property.
The prolonged wet spell through the weekend could disrupt travel, work and production. Residents, particularly those who spend time travelling outdoors, should keep up with weather updates and plan appropriate precautions.
