During the first days of summer, increasing numbers of residents and tourists have been visiting Ma Hao waterfall to swim, relax and escape the heat.
Hidden inside lush primary forest, the waterfall stands out with white streams cascading over large rock formations, creating a cool mist that spreads throughout the area. Temperatures here are often significantly lower than in urban areas, offering visitors relief even on the hottest days.
According to residents of Nang Cat village, hundreds of tourists arrive during weekends and peak heatwaves to cool off. Many families bring food and set up tents beside the stream to spend the entire day relaxing.

Trinh Tuan Thanh, a visitor from Hac Thanh Ward in Thanh Hoa Province, said: “It feels completely different from the suffocating heat in the city. The stream water is cold, the air is fresh and the children really enjoy swimming and exploring nature.”
To reach Ma Hao waterfall, travelers from Hanoi can take a route of around 150-170km via the expressway or National Highway 1A to Thanh Hoa, then continue along the Ho Chi Minh Road to the former Ngoc Lac Town area. From there, visitors turn onto National Highway 15A toward the former Lang Chanh District area, then travel another 10km toward Nang Cat village in Linh Son Commune to reach the waterfall.
Although the road leading to the waterfall has become more accessible in recent years, the area still retains its untouched charm. After parking at the foot of the mountain, visitors walk along a small stream to reach the main waterfall area.

According to many travelers, the best time to explore Ma Hao waterfall is from May to August, when the weather is hottest and the stream is at its clearest and coolest. Because many rocks around the waterfall are covered with slippery moss, visitors are advised to wear anti-slip shoes for safer movement.
As the area still has limited accommodation and dining services, visitors are encouraged to bring food, picnic supplies or barbecue equipment to fully enjoy the natural surroundings deep in the forests of Thanh Hoa.

Nguyen Ngoc Son, chairman of the Linh Son Commune People’s Committee, said Ma Hao waterfall is gradually becoming an attractive eco-tourism destination in western Thanh Hoa. In addition to swimming, visitors often check in on the large rock formations, organize picnics or explore the cultural life of the Thai ethnic community in nearby Nang Cat village. Some local households have also started developing food and homestay services for tourists.
However, local authorities have urged visitors to protect the environment, avoid littering and remain cautious when swimming during the rainy season.
