The theater promises a modern, multi-functional architecture designed to host a variety of performing arts, including opera, symphony, ballet, reformed opera, and more.

Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Phan Van Mai, has tasked the Department of Culture and Sports to collaborate with the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction of Civil and Industrial Works, alongside other relevant departments, to finalize the architectural design for the Thu Thiem Theater. This design aims to reflect the theater's functionality, artistic value, and harmonious integration with the surrounding urban landscape.

The design of the theater is set to be a highlight of modern and artistic architecture. It will accommodate various cultural activities and services, creating a vibrant cultural hub in Ho Chi Minh City. The stage design will meet world-class standards, embodying the unique value of performing arts and contributing to the city's cultural heritage.

Mr. Mai emphasized that the architectural design must harmonize traditional values with modern aesthetics, contributing to the "Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space." The project should appeal to a wide audience, serving all social classes and tourists.

The preparation for the project involves extensive research and consultation with experts in architecture, arts, and performance. Insights from renowned theaters around the world will be considered to ensure the Thu Thiem Theater stands as a premier cultural institution.

The project, originally approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council in October 2018, had an initial investment of over 1,500 billion VND and was expected to be completed by 2022. However, the investment has since been adjusted to nearly 2,000 billion VND, with a revised completion timeline extending to 2024.

The Thu Thiem Theater will feature a 1,700-seat capacity, including a 1,200-seat main auditorium and a 500-seat smaller hall. In 2021, two second-place winners were awarded in an architectural design competition for the project.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has now directed the Department of Culture and Sports to prepare a pre-feasibility study report to adjust the project and proceed with the next steps. The Thu Thiem Theater is slated to be a landmark project in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's reunification on April 30, 2025.
