A project that turns the southern metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City into a ‘smart city’ has begun, aiming to bring multiple benefits to local residents. The model has been piloted over the past two years at Quang Trung Software City in District 12, where workers have been assisted in their daily tasks by various technological applications.

In 2016, Quang Trung Software City digitalised its technical infrastructure via asset management system GIS and tools to manage data and update infrastructure information regarding electricity and water supply, wastewater, greenery and land.

The city has applied a smart traffic management system and equipped offices with automatic Smarthome systems, making it easier to manage the whole premises.

“With this technological solution, whenever someone breaks into the building, the system will alert us automatically,” said Nhieu Quoc Tran from Quang Trung Software City’s Technological Solution group.

“The light will turn on while an alert message will be sent to our phone immediately,” Tuan clarified.

A farming lab has also opened, using technological advances to control the quality of cultivation process.

Tu Minh Thanh, General Director of the 5D Agriculture Solutions Joint Stock Company said: “This container is fully equipped with a lighting system and air conditioner to control temperature suitable to various kinds of plants. Therefore, we can grow more plants with higher values”.

“Besides, I can use a mobile application to check the system whenever I go,” Thanh added.

Upon completion, the ‘smart city’ model will deliver a series of benefits, including low energy costs, favourable traffic systems, higher-quality education, transparent business environments, easier interaction between citizens and authorities and an improvement in competition and living conditions.

Lam Nguyen Hai Long, Director of the Quang Trung Software City said: “We still go in line with the HCM City’s smart city project. The Quang Trung Software City has advantages in technology, so we select those which suit the city’s objectives and pilot them”.

The solutions to turn Ho Chi Minh City into a smart city must help addressing pressing issues such as transport, environment, security and information security management, bringing benefits to citizens and modernising the city’s managing system.-VNA
