Director of the city’s Culture and Sports Centre, Vo Phung told Việt Nam News that the system will be officially for use from June 19 at the entrance ticket counters to the Old Quarter.
The move is part of plastic waste reduction efforts in the UNESCO-recognised world heritage site.
Phung said people can refill their own water bottles from taps at 8 Hoang Dieu; 78 Le Loi, 155B Tran Phu and 62 Bach Dang streets.
He said the system will help reduce the use of water bottles in Hoi An.
Earlier this year, Hoi An launched a campaign to raise awareness of good behaviour and hospitality among the community, promoting a friendly tourism environment.
Local people have been encouraged to maintain tranquility and avoid single-use plastic bags, straws and cups.
According to the city’s Culture and Sports Centre, 2.3 million tourists, including 2 million foreigners, visited the Old Quarter in Hoi An last year. Half of the foreign tourists were from China and Korea.
