The General Hospital in the Mekong delta city of Can Tho had to pay VND375 million ($16,261) in compensation and provide lifetime medical treatment to a patient after it wrongly removed both her kidneys many years ago, according to a decision of a court on July 3.

Before, the court in Ninh Kieu District required the hospital to pay over VND302 million ($13,300) in recompense and give a monthly amount of VND5.8 million ($255) to Tu until she dies; however, the hospital appealed against it.
In previous courts, the hospital agreed to pay VND200 million to the woman yet her husband refused to receive it.
Her husband, Mr. Tri said that the family fell into debt; his wife has to take drug regularly and can’t labor while they have to take care of three children.
After the jury board explained their family condition, the hospital agreed to pay the amount as compensation and lifetime medical treatment.
In the end of 2011, the woman was taken to the Can Tho General Hospital in Can Tho and she was diagnosed that hat Tu’s right kidney was functioning properly but her left kidney had failed and needed to be removed. Doctor performed an operation to remove it; but she suffered complication, ultrasound test result showed that both her kidneys had been removed.
Later she was taken to Hue Central Hospital for kidney transplant.
However, as per the National Institute of Forensic Medicine’s conclusion that her health declines by 81 percent; consequently, patient Tu took legal action against the hospital for five years.
