About 500 pupils are having to travel by boats through dangerous locations as early flooding damaged embankments and roads in the southern Dong Thap Province.

A delegation led by Vice Chairman of Dong Thap People's Committee Doan Tan Buu recently visited the teachers and pupils in Thuong Phuoc Commune, one of the hardest hit locations in the province.

Nguyen Huu Tien, head of the Hong Ngu District Department of Education and Training, said that many streets to schools had been flooded, including nursery and primary schools.

The district authorities provided life jackets and encouraged parents and local people to escort children to school. Sudden erosion ate away a part of the schoolyard at Thuong Phuoc 1 Primary School. Thanks to quick action the authorities were able to prevent further damage.

Doan Tan Buu reassured the teachers and asked locality authorities to monitor the weather to issue information, ensuring that the children can still go to schools in safety.
