VietNamNet Bridge - On rainy days, the people of Yen Thanh district in the central province of Nghe An flock to fields to catch field mice.
![]() According to farmers, catching field-mice has doublebenefits as it brings about extra income while protecting the harvest.
The field of Yen Thanh District is submerged by flood. After the floods, local people go to the field to hunt field mice. Most of them are young men, who gather in groups of ten.
Locals said because of flooding, mice had to run to the shore or high positions such as twigs to avoid flooding.
Upon detection of the mouse, a person climbs onto the tree to shake the branch. Once the mouse falls down, a group of people standing under the tree use sticks of about 1 m to beat the mouse.
Being beaten, the exhausted mouse cannot swim and is caught.
This group of mouse hunters said they usually work for about 3-4 hours. The mice are processed into delicious dishes or sold at the market.
A hunter can earn from VND200,000 to VND500,000 ($10-$25) a day. |
