VietNamNet Bridge - Winning high prizes at the 2016 International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), Nguyen Ngoc Duc, Nguyen Nga Nhi and Phan Minh Duc said the passion for scientific research helped them win the world’s most prestigious science competition for under-15 students.

The 13th IJSO took place in Bali, Indonesia on December 2-12, gathering students from 48 countries and territories. All six members of the Vietnamese competition team won prizes at the competition, including two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Nguyen Ngoc Duc, a 10th grader, got 93.5 score, the 17th highest achievement among the competitors. 

Duc is very well known among Vietnamese students after receiving the silver medal at an international math competition held in China in 2015.

The boy said he has a strong passion for discovering scientific knowledge, especially in chemistry. He can sit all day to do exercises or work in laboratories without fatigue.

At IJSO, students had three days to solve questions. Duc said the questions were not too difficult for him and Vietnamese students, but practice exercises were really a challenge.

Vietnamese students had 11 weeks to prepare for the competition, but were at a disadvantage in comparison with students from other countries who had many practice hours at their school.

The second gold silver medal winner was Phan Minh Duc, from the same class with Nguyen Ngoc Duc. With 93.2 score, Minh Duc was the 22nd highest scorer. 

At the age of 15, Minh Duc has attended international competitions five times and he won gold medals at the 2013, 2014 and 2015 junior math competitions.

The boy’s hobby in childhood was not colorful games in parents’ mobile phones or TV, but reading books. He could read when he turned four.

The 2016 IJSO held in Bali was the 13th competition and this was the 8th time Vietnam sent its competition team. The Vietnamese 2016 competition team for the first time comprised two female students and they both won medals.

Nguyen Nga Nhi, one of them, won a silver medal with 90.05 score. In order to become a member of the Vietnamese competition team, besides the second prize she won at the 2015 city’s math competition for excellent students, she had to experience two rounds where she competed with over 100 other excellent students.

Nhi is also well known among students as she won high prizes at the 2014 and 2015 international junior math competitions and APMOPS (Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary School). She came first at the high school entrance exam some months ago.

All the three students are from the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, the best-known school in Hanoi.
