A road in Phu Quoc is flooded after a recent heavy rain

In July, Kien Giang Province People's Committee established an inspection team with officials from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Transport and Department of Construction to check and review 80 construction projects in Phu Quoc District.

The results in October showed that many projects violated construction regulations. 90% private residences lacked building permits. As a result, many newly-formed urban areas are not in accordance with urban planning. Some of them are built on the land for other projects which have led to various disputes.

Private residences can be found on the land for Lan Anh Resort, Sunset Sanato projects. According to the inspectors, the investors of Ba Keo Resort already paid in advance for ground clearance but 60 private residences have been built on the land.

Moreover, such spontaneous constructions have blocked several sewers and caused flooding during heavy rains.

Director of the Department of Construction Le Quoc Anh has asked the authorities of Phu Quoc District and Kien Giang Province to increase inspections, tighten management and punish violators. Town and communal chairmen should be punished if the violations continue. Phu Quoc District authorities were asked to submit a report by December 15.

In September, inspectors in the southern province of Kien Giang also revealed various violations in protected forest land management by the leaders of Phu Quoc Island District.

From 2010 to 2016, nearly 4,602 hectares of forest land was allocated to the authorities of Cua Can, Ham Ninh, Cua Duong and Duong To communes. However, the authorities of Phu Quoc Island failed in managing and monitoring the land as well as local agencies and communal people's committees. They violated the Land Law when not reporting the cadastral map to higher management.

The inspectors asked the provincial authorities to punish chairman of Phu Quoc District People's Committee, director of Phu Quoc Forest Management Board, and head of the Department of Land Management. State officials that let violations occur should also be punished.
