Obama is the third US President to visit Vietnam since the two countries normalised their relations in 1995, following Bill Clinton in 2000 and George W.Bush in 2006.

The President’s visit to Vietnam is expected to enhance the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership, boost the implementation of high-level agreements reached by the two countries, seek measures as well as orientations to boost the bilateral ties, and discuss regional and international issues of shared concern.

The Vietnam-US relationship has seen major developments over the past 21 years.

Links in security-defence, education, science-technology, and climate change prevention between the two countries made significant progresses with the signing of the Joint Vision Statement in 2015.

Two-way trade increased 90 times to 45 billion USD last year, and the figure is expected to rise further after the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement is officially approved.
