Nam Dinh Textile and Garment Corporation (Natexco), which was ever known as Nam Dinh Textile Plant, the biggest of its kind in the Indochinese area during the French colony will be soon relocated to another place, giving the way for a urban area.

Natexco will be moved to Hoa Xa Industrial Park in Nghia Hung District, while the site will be used for the VND410 billion urban area. The 24.8-ha project will include trade centres, apartment buildings and some other works such as schools, parks, green space and sports centres.

However, many people, particularly who ever worked at the factory, felt regret for the removal, saying that the plant was anyway the pride of Nam Dinh Province.

The plant was also once the biggest of its kind in the Indochinese area during the French colony. Its ups and downs ever affected much the provincial socio-economic development.

In 1924, the plant employed 6,000 labourers and the figure grew up to nearly 13,000 in 1985. In the early 1980s, every family in Nam Dinh City has a person working at the plant on average.

Many people said that part of the old Nam Dinh Textile Plant should be preserved as souvenirs of the prime past of the city's garment and textile sector.

However, others said that the plant is too old and its equipment is backward, so it is unnecessary to keep it, instead of relocating the plant to another place which is far from residential areas for the better environmental protection.
