An international scientific conference on flavour physics opened on August 14, in the central city of Quy Nhon, as part of the on-going Rencontres du Vietnam 2017, a series of scientific events held annually in Vietnam.

The conference has attracted the participation of 50 delegates from 16 countries and will last until August 19.
In particle physics, flavour is a property that distinguishes the different members in the two groups of basic building blocks of matter, the quarks and the leptons, according to the Britannica encyclopaedia.
There are six flavours of subatomic particle within each of these two groups: six leptons and six quarks.
The conference is a forum to promote productive collaboration between experimentalists, theorists, and physicists working in the heavy flavour, neutrino, charged leptons and K physics domains, as well as between various institutions, said Professor Tran Thanh Van.
Professor Van, Chairman of Rencontres du Vietnam 2017, said that the conference is also an opportunity for Vietnamese scientists to learn from and exchange ideas with physicists from around the world.
Rencontres du Vietnam has been organised since 1993 with the aim of helping Vietnamese scientists and those of the Pacific-Asian world to establish new contacts and exchanges with their colleagues from the West, including many Nobel laureates.
