Apple is expected to introduce a series of display upgrades on the iPhone 17, including larger screen sizes, a smaller Dynamic Island, and improved brightness for better outdoor visibility.
Among all smartphone components, the display commands the most attention - it’s where users spend the most time interacting. The upcoming iPhone 17 is rumored to bring several major enhancements to its screen technology, with significant benefits for both the standard and Pro models.
Here are five of the most talked-about rumored upgrades that could make the iPhone 17’s display a standout feature:
High refresh rate for standard models
Since 2021, Apple’s Pro models have offered 120Hz refresh rates, while standard iPhones have remained at 60Hz. Multiple leaks now suggest Apple may bring its ProMotion technology to the standard iPhone 17, delivering smoother scrolling and more responsive gameplay. If true, this would be a major competitive move, aligning Apple’s standard models with Android rivals in terms of screen fluidity.
Larger screen size
Building on the trend started with the iPhone 16 Pro, the iPhone 17 standard version is expected to ditch the 6.1-inch display in favor of a 6.3-inch panel - the same size as the current Pro. Though not a dramatic leap, the extra real estate will offer a more immersive experience without compromising Apple’s signature compact design.
Smaller Dynamic Island
Another rumor points to a more compact Dynamic Island. Apple is reportedly adopting “metalens” technology for Face ID - tiny metal lenses that integrate the transmitter and receiver into a single unit. This innovation could shrink the Dynamic Island across all iPhone 17 models, not just the Pro Max, as originally suggested.
Pro model display improvements
While the standard iPhone 17 may receive notable upgrades, the Pro variants are expected to advance as well. A leak from late last year hinted that Apple would use low-dielectric TEE (Thin Enhanced Efficiency) technology to improve energy efficiency and durability. However, subsequent reports indicated Apple might struggle to scale production of this tech.
Brighter screens that sustain peak brightness longer
There haven’t been many leaks about display brightness, but recent reports suggest the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max may be able to maintain peak brightness levels longer during outdoor use. This could be a crucial competitive edge, especially as rivals like the Pixel 10 Pro claim peak brightness of up to 3,300 nits.
For reference, Tom’s Guide found the iPhone 16 Pro reached a peak brightness of 1,510 nits. Enhancing brightness sustainability would improve usability in harsh lighting conditions and reinforce Apple’s commitment to real-world performance improvements.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup at its “Awe Dropping” event on September 10 (September 9 in the US). Then, we’ll finally learn which of these screen rumors were true.
