A wave of fresh leaks about the iPhone 17 Pro Max is stirring excitement among tech fans, with features that might sway even the most loyal users of older Pro models to upgrade this fall.

Apple has confirmed its iPhone 17 launch event will take place on September 9 (Vietnam time: September 10). As anticipation builds, many are asking whether it's worth sticking with their current Pro device or switching to the new iPhone 17 Pro – or perhaps its most powerful variant: the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Larger in all the right ways

The Pro Max models have long been compared to mid-size SUVs in the smartphone world – bigger, sturdier, and packed with features. The 17 Pro Max follows this trend with a larger screen, a thicker body, and a notably bigger battery.

According to May 2025 leaks from 9to5Mac, the new Pro Max could be as thick as 8.725mm – nearly half a millimeter more than its predecessor. While that may seem bulkier, fans of battery longevity will likely welcome the increase.

Adding to that, iOS 26 introduces Adaptive Power – an AI-powered feature that intelligently manages energy use, potentially extending battery life even without a larger cell.

A small but noteworthy design update: the Apple logo might shift toward the center of the MagSafe area on the back, giving clear cases a cleaner look. Leaked dummy units from insider Majin Bu on X also suggest that prototype cases are already in circulation.

Wireless reverse charging

Perhaps the most exciting rumored feature is reverse wireless charging, allowing users to charge an Apple Watch or AirPods simply by placing them on the back of the iPhone – no cables or power banks needed.

9to5Mac reports that both the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max may support this feature. As Android flagships like Samsung’s Galaxy series have offered this for years, Apple joining the trend seems highly likely.

One possible challenge is that Apple Watch still uses a proprietary charging standard, which might require special case cutouts or accessories for seamless use.

Massive camera upgrades

The Pro Max's camera system is always a highlight, and leaks suggest the rear module could now span nearly the full width of the phone’s back – dubbed a “camera continent” rather than a “camera island.”

The biggest change? A 48MP telephoto lens – a major jump from the 12MP currently found in iPhone Pro models. This upgrade promises sharper, more detailed zoom photography.

The front camera is also expected to double in resolution from 12MP to 24MP, greatly enhancing selfies and video calls. However, experts believe the real purpose of this upgrade is to support simultaneous dual-camera video recording – a feature currently available via third-party apps but likely to become native.

iPhone 17 Pro Max flaunts a $12,000 luxury case

Yes, the iPhone is already premium, but luxury brand Caviar has taken it to the next level with a $12,000 case option – pure extravagance.

8x variable optical zoom

One of the most anticipated upgrades is a variable 8x optical zoom. According to MacRumors, the iPhone 17 Pro Max may feature a mechanically shifting lens, offering seamless zooming between 5x and 8x optically, without relying on digital cropping.

Currently, the iPhone 16 Pro Max offers only 5x zoom via its tetraprism lens. A successful implementation of a mobile mechanical zoom would mark a major leap in smartphone photography.

8K video recording

MacRumors also revealed that Apple tested 8K video recording on the iPhone 16 Pro, and the feature is likely to debut officially on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

This could be a game-changer for filmmakers using iPhones, especially with Apple’s recent push into mobile cinematography, including high-profile projects like 28 Years Later and the F1 documentary.

Combined with native dual-camera video recording, the Pro Max could become the ultimate vlogging, interview, and reaction video device.

Vapor chamber cooling system
Recording in 8K generates serious heat, so Majin Bu predicts Apple will introduce a vapor chamber cooling system in the iPhone 17 Pro – a solution already adopted in gaming smartphones.

This technology works by allowing fluid to evaporate and condense in a continuous cycle, preventing overheating and maintaining performance.

Next-gen connectivity with Wi-Fi 7 and new Apple modem

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to support Wi-Fi 7 and Apple’s next-gen cellular modem. While the iPhone 16E debuted Apple’s first in-house modem (C1), it lacked mmWave and Wi-Fi 7 support.

MacRumors suggests the new C2 modem in the iPhone 17 Pro may fix these gaps, boosting speed and improving power efficiency. Still, some experts believe Apple might continue relying on Qualcomm modems in the Pro line to ensure top-tier 5G performance.

Striking new orange color

Finally, one of the most exciting aesthetic leaks: the iPhone 17 Pro Max may launch in a striking burnt orange color. Majin Bu shared renders showing a rich coppery tone, breaking from the subdued hues traditionally associated with Pro models.

Additionally, Apple is rumored to introduce a light sky-blue option across the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

While these features remain unconfirmed, they’re more than enough to make even the most loyal current iPhone users rethink their upgrade plans. With standout features like 8x zoom, 48MP telephoto, 8K video, wireless reverse charging, Wi-Fi 7, and bold new colors, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is shaping up to be the ultimate device for both tech enthusiasts and mobile photographers.

September is just around the corner – and if even half of these rumors are true, many won’t be able to resist upgrading.
