Apple has announced that the Apple Intelligence suite in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26 will integrate GPT-5, OpenAI’s most powerful AI model to date, launched on August 8.
GPT-5 is the latest version and is considered a major leap forward in multiple domains. Apple confirmed that the ChatGPT feature within Apple Intelligence will soon be upgraded from GPT-4o to GPT-5.
Currently, ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence runs on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2, allowing users to enable or disable it. When activated, Siri can call on ChatGPT to help answer complex requests, including questions about images and documents.
Users can also ask ChatGPT to compose text or create images from prompts, as well as use image recognition via Camera Control to quickly identify places and objects nearby.
From iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26, the system will be upgraded to GPT-5. These software updates are expected next month, meaning users will soon experience the new model’s full power.
To protect privacy, Apple applies measures such as hiding IP addresses and ensuring OpenAI does not store user queries. If a user links their OpenAI account, OpenAI’s data usage policy will apply.
Alongside GPT-5 integration, Apple Intelligence on iOS 26 will introduce real-time translation in FaceTime, Phone, and Messages, and enhance the Visual Intelligence tool to search and interact with content directly on the screen.
Apple will also open its on-device foundational model to developers, enabling them to build smarter apps leveraging Apple Intelligence’s core technology.
In addition to GPT-5, OpenAI has released two open-source large language models, including one that can run directly on Apple Silicon-powered Macs, and introduced changes to encourage healthier ChatGPT usage habits.
