The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are gradually coming into focus through a stream of notable leaks, pointing to a generation defined by performance, camera advancements and improved connectivity.

Multiple sources suggest Apple will unveil the duo in September 2026, featuring advanced hardware upgrades such as a new in-house 5G modem and the A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process.

While not expected to be a complete design overhaul, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is still shaping up to be a meaningful upgrade. Apple is reportedly experimenting with new technologies, including under-display Face ID, variable aperture cameras and expanded satellite internet capabilities.

The most significant upgrades

According to leaks, the standout changes include a smaller Dynamic Island, the new A20 Pro chip, Apple’s self-developed C2 modem and camera improvements.

Apple is also rumored to be adjusting its release strategy, launching only the Pro models in September 2026 while delaying the standard iPhone 18 until spring 2027.

This shift suggests a stronger focus on the premium segment, while also creating marketing space for a high-end foldable iPhone expected to debut around the same time.

A new release strategy focused on Pro models

For years, Apple has introduced its entire iPhone lineup in September. However, recent reports indicate a shift toward a staggered release schedule.

In September 2026, Apple may unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, a foldable iPhone and possibly a new iPhone Air variant. The standard iPhone 18 and a new iPhone 18e could follow in spring 2027.

This approach allows Apple to concentrate attention on premium devices during the peak holiday shopping season, while maintaining starting prices from US$999 and above for the September lineup.

Design: subtle refinements rather than bold changes

The overall design of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max is expected to remain close to their predecessors. Still, a few refinements have been mentioned.

One leak suggests Apple may introduce a slightly translucent Ceramic Shield back, creating a fresh visual effect.

New color options such as deep burgundy red or coffee tones are also rumored, potentially replacing the traditional black variant.

Camera: the potential arrival of variable aperture

A20 Pro chip: a leap forward with 2nm technology

The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to feature the A20 Pro chip, manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process - a major step up from the current 3nm technology.

The smaller process allows for higher transistor density, delivering approximately 15% faster performance and 30% better power efficiency.

Apple may also introduce a “super core” design similar to its M-series chips, boosting AI and graphics performance.

Additionally, the A20 could integrate RAM directly into the SoC package using WMCM technology, increasing bandwidth and reducing memory latency.
