Apple is set to hold its launch event on Sept. 9, with the rumored iPhone 18 Pro Max expected to bring a series of hardware upgrades that could make the next-generation flagship a worthwhile upgrade for some users.

Recent reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature an all-new A20 Pro chip, a larger battery, a variable-aperture camera, as well as changes to Dynamic Island and its connectivity modem. If accurate, these would represent notable differences from the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

However, Apple has so far only confirmed that its launch event will take place on Sept. 9. The company has not officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max or revealed its specifications. All of the features below therefore remain based on reports and could change before the device is officially unveiled.

A20 Pro chip could deliver more power and efficiency

One of the most significant upgrades rumored for the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the A20 Pro, Apple’s next-generation processor for its premium iPhone lineup.

According to Tom’s Guide, Apple could manufacture the A20 Pro using a 2nm process. If confirmed, this would mark a significant advance over the A19 Pro used in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The new manufacturing process could allow Apple to improve performance while increasing energy efficiency.

The move to 2nm is expected to deliver noticeable benefits in processing-intensive tasks such as gaming, image processing, video recording and artificial intelligence features. Lower power consumption could also help extend battery life.

Even so, the real-world performance difference between the A20 Pro and A19 Pro cannot be determined until Apple officially reveals the specifications and the iPhone 18 Pro Max undergoes real-world testing.

Larger battery could give iPhone 18 Pro Max more staying power

A larger battery is also expected to be one of the notable upgrades in the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The new model could feature a battery of around 5,567mAh, higher than that of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple has not confirmed this figure.

If accurate, the increased battery capacity, combined with the improved energy efficiency of the A20 Pro chip, could allow the iPhone 18 Pro Max to last longer between charges.

That could be a meaningful change for users who regularly use their phones to watch videos, play games, take photos, record video or perform AI-related tasks. For the Pro Max line, which is aimed at more demanding users, battery life has always been an important consideration.

Variable-aperture camera could make a major difference

One of the most intriguing changes rumored for the iPhone 18 Pro Max is a main camera with a variable aperture.

According to Tom’s Guide, the new camera system could allow users to adjust the amount of light entering the lens. If Apple introduces the feature, it would offer greater flexibility when taking photos under different lighting conditions.

A variable aperture could give the camera greater control over incoming light while providing more options for how images are rendered. That could make it a notable upgrade for users interested in mobile photography.

However, Apple has yet to confirm a variable-aperture camera for the device.

Smaller Dynamic Island could free up more screen space

Beyond the camera, Apple could also refine Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

MacRumors reports that Apple could reduce the size of Dynamic Island by changing some of the components used for the Face ID system. If that happens, the display cutout would occupy less space, providing slightly more uninterrupted screen area.

The change, however, is unlikely to make a dramatic difference in everyday use. The iPhone 18 Pro Max display is still expected to measure around 6.9 inches, broadly in line with the previous generation.

Apple-designed C2 modem could improve connectivity

Another hardware upgrade being discussed is the C2 modem, the next generation of Apple’s in-house modem technology.

According to Tom’s Guide, the new modem could provide better connectivity while using power more efficiently. It would also represent another important step in Apple’s strategy to reduce its dependence on third-party modems and gain greater control over its core technologies.

If the C2 modem does appear in the iPhone 18 Pro Max, users could see improvements in network connectivity as well as energy consumption. However, its specific features and specifications will remain unclear until Apple provides official details.

Taken together, the leaks suggest Apple may once again focus on upgrading the hardware inside the iPhone 18 Pro Max rather than giving the device an entirely new design.
