From design and camera to battery and AI hardware, the flagship is expected to redefine Apple’s iPhone strategy for the 2026–2027 period. Below is a comprehensive look at its rumored launch timeline, pricing, and key changes.

Launch timeline

Industry sources indicate that Apple is likely to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September 2026. Both Pro models may debut alongside Apple’s first foldable iPhone, setting the stage for a major launch event.

Notably, the standard iPhone 18 may not launch at the same time. Instead, it is rumored to be delayed until spring 2027, alongside an iPhone Air 2 and iPhone 18e. This shift is seen as a strategic move to draw more attention to the Pro lineup and encourage earlier upgrades.

Following the announcement, Apple is expected to maintain its familiar release schedule, with a short pre-order window and retail availability about 10 days later. Supply chain signals also suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max entered trial production in late 2025, aligning with a fall release.

Pricing outlook

Recent reports suggest Apple may keep the starting price unchanged for the 256GB version. However, cost pressures are mounting.

The company is expected to adopt a new 2nm chip from TSMC in 2026. Moving from a 3nm to 2nm process could raise per-chip costs from around US$50 to US$85 - an increase of up to 70%.

At the same time, RAM prices are rising due to growing demand for AI computing. Several smartphone makers, including Samsung, OnePlus, and Oppo, have already begun increasing prices. If Apple chooses not to absorb these costs, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be more expensive than its predecessor.

Camera: upgrades without a 200MP leap

The expected camera system includes a 48MP main sensor, 48MP telephoto, 48MP ultra-wide, and an 18MP front camera with Center Stage support.

While some rumors have pointed to a 200MP sensor supplied by Samsung, this has not been widely confirmed.

More notable is the possibility of larger apertures on both the main and telephoto cameras, allowing more light capture and improving low-light photography and background blur. Variable aperture is also rumored, enabling DSLR-like control over depth of field.

Another leak mentions a teleconverter accessory, which could enhance optical zoom without relying on digital cropping - a feature typically associated with professional cameras.

Camera Control button may be simplified

Apple is not expected to remove the Camera Control button but may change how it functions. Instead of combining capacitive sensing with pressure input, the new version may rely solely on pressure detection.

This approach, already seen on some high-end Android devices, could reduce manufacturing and repair costs while preserving core functionality.

Storage: built for AI and 8K video

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to offer storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.

Higher capacity is increasingly important as users record 4K and 8K video, store ProRes RAW files, and run AI-intensive applications. Smartphones are rapidly evolving into full-fledged content creation tools.

Design: familiar but possibly thicker

The overall design is expected to remain similar to its predecessor, with a large camera module, Dynamic Island, and triple-lens layout. Under-display Face ID may not arrive until 2027.

Apple is reportedly testing new color options such as coffee brown, purple, wine red, and deep red. In Europe, the device may transition entirely to eSIM.

One notable change is thickness. The iPhone 18 Pro Max could be slightly thicker to accommodate a larger battery, with total weight possibly exceeding 240 grams, making it the heaviest iPhone yet.

Display: improved LTPO+ efficiency

In addition to higher capacity, efficiency gains from Apple’s in-house 5G modem and iOS 27 optimizations could significantly improve battery life.

AI and iOS 27: a smarter Siri

iOS 27 is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18, with a strong focus on AI.
