While retaining the same screen sizes as their predecessors, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are rumored to feature two notable upgrades to their display technology.

The changes could not only make the displays on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max more efficient but also free up additional screen space, bringing the iPhone another step closer to a truly uninterrupted display.

LTPO+ could make the iPhone 18 Pro Max display more power-efficient

LTPO has long been the key display technology behind two standout features on Pro iPhones: Always-On Display and ProMotion.

With the iPhone 18 Pro Max, however, Apple is rumored to be moving to a more advanced version of the technology known as LTPO+.

According to The Elec, conventional LTPO technology uses oxide material for the thin-film transistors, or TFTs, that serve as switching components.

LTPO+, meanwhile, expands the use of oxide material to the driving TFTs as well, allowing more precise control of electrical current while the OLED display is emitting light.

With finer control over current, the display could optimize its operation more effectively based on surrounding environmental conditions and how the device is actually being used.

This is considered an important factor in improving energy efficiency and extending battery life.

Another notable advantage of LTPO+ is its potential to reduce screen flickering in low-light environments.

The new technology could adjust display response more quickly and precisely, providing a more stable viewing experience when the iPhone is used in dim conditions.

If the leaks prove accurate, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users could expect displays that operate more smoothly and consistently while consuming less power.

It may be a relatively subtle upgrade, but one that could deliver noticeable benefits in everyday use.

Dynamic Island could become significantly smaller

The second upgrade would be much easier to see: a smaller Dynamic Island.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are rumored to feature a significantly reduced Dynamic Island compared with the previous generation, slightly increasing the amount of usable screen space.

Current rumors suggest the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be around 35% smaller than the cutout on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

If that figure proves accurate, users would gain more display space without Apple having to increase the overall size of the device.

Hints of the new design may even have surfaced in iOS 27, particularly through the redesigned Siri interface.

The way Apple has designed its virtual assistant interface is believed to offer clues about the size of the Dynamic Island the company could adopt on its next generation of iPhones.

Apple first introduced Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022. Since then, the company has steadily expanded features associated with Dynamic Island and Live Activities, turning the area into an important part of the iPhone’s interactive experience.

In hardware terms, however, the size of the cutout has remained largely unchanged across several generations.

That has left Dynamic Island as one of the most visually prominent features of the iPhone display.

With the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple is reportedly preparing to finally make the area significantly smaller.

While the cutout may not disappear completely, a reduction of around 35% would represent a meaningful step forward in the iPhone’s design.

Combined with LTPO+ technology and other display improvements, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could deliver a more refined viewing experience without requiring a larger screen.

More importantly, these changes could serve as a stepping stone toward Apple’s bigger goal: an iPhone with an almost completely seamless display and no visible cutout in the future.
