iPhone Xr is the low-cost version that Apple introduced on September 12 together with iPhone Xs and Xs Max. However, the manufacturer decided to market the product later, on October 26.

Authentic iPhone Xr has yet to hit the market, but counterfeit iPhone Xr has been available in Hanoi and HCMC for more than 10 days.

Sellers are introducing the products as ‘Taiwanese iPhone Xr’, ‘Hong Kong iPhone Xr’ and ‘first-class Taiwanese 2-sim iPhone Xr’.

The counterfeit products are sold at private shops on Tan Ky Tan Quy in Tan Phu district, HCMC, Huynh Tan Phat in district 7 and Nguyen Trai in Thanh Xuan district in Hanoi.

The smartphone is priced at VND2.5 million, but sellers do not provide boxes. Though the price is very low, some sellers even offer Bluetooth headphones for free or discount rate of VND100,000.

Like all other counterfeit smartphone models, imitation iPhone Xr looks like the genuine product, with notch screen and glass-like back (but it is made of plastic) and the software interface designed like iOS.

Like all other counterfeit smartphone models, imitation iPhone Xr looks like the genuine product, with notch screen and glass-like back (but it is made of plastic) and the software interface designed like iOS.

The physical buttons, Lightning portal and loudspeakers are in the same positions as the genuine product.

However, the design and appearance are not sophisticated. The manufacturer failed to design a thin-edge screen.

iPhone Xr’s interface has a design similar to iOS, including icons, swipe operation, locked screen and control center.

But in fact, it runs on the old versions of Android, mostly 7.0 Nougat. When users access Apple Store, they will be required to log in with Google accounts and then access Play Store to download apps.

The information displayed on the smartphone machine shows that it is ‘powerful’ with Apple A11 microprocessor, RAM 3 GB and 64 GB memory, just like the genuine version.

However, when examining it with specific software, the machines run badly. It only runs Media Tek chip, RAM 1 G, and memory 16 GB, with 2 physical sims.

On smartphone users’ forums, people cited problems of the counterfeit product. The low configuration lead to uncomfortable use and slow response speed. It often automatically escapes apps.

The machine also has front and back cameras. However, the resolution is low, just 5 megapixels, and the quality of photos is bad.

Hung, a technician at a smartphone shop on Binh Thanh, said he is sure that the product was made in China and smuggled to Vietnam.

In related news, iPhone XS brought to Vietnam across border gates have seen the prices drop sharply, now selling from VND26 million, equal to the price of a genuine iPhone X.
