On March 17, Japan handed over a patrol vessel to Vietnam to use for maritime security purposes.
The Japan International Cooperation System handed the ship over to the Vietnam Fisheries Resources Surveillance force at a delivery ceremony at the Hong Ha Shipyard in the northern port city Haiphong The vessel is part of a continuing deal that originated with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida during an August 2014 visit to Hanoi to help the country strengthen maritime safety. The ship handed over is 65.19 metres in length, 9.3 metres wide, 4.3 metres high and has a loaded capacity of 499 tons. It carries a crew of 20. After the vessel is converted and equipped for fisheries control, it will be used by Vietnamese fisheries surveillance forces to patrol and enforce fisheries-related laws at sea.
