The flooding on October 9-12 caused landslides and subsidence on several parts of the route.
However, until Monday, the route’s section from km 51 to km 72 still had cracks and areas where subsidence had occurred had not been filled. The local authority has, therefore, set up fences and warnings signs at these points. Some cracks at bends, in particular, pose a serious threat to passengers and vehicles travelling on the road.
According to the Dân trí newspaper, the local authority is collaborating with other functional forces to evaluate and find solutions to repair the damaged areas.
National Road 217 was upgraded in mid-2013 and opened in January 2016 under the framework of the second Greater Mekong Subregion Transport Network Improvement Project.
The upgrade project received the investment of US$97.4 million, with $75 million from the Asian Development Fund supported by Asian Development Bank and $22.4 million as counterpart funding from the Vietnamese Government.
The project aimed to renovate 94.7km of National Road 217, passing through Thanh HoaProvince’s districts of Cam Thuy, Ba Thuoc and Quan Son. — VNS
