Lao Cai Province’s authorities have urged the government to quickly build a line to connect to China's Sanai Station to improve the provincial economy.
According to the socio-economic planning from 2016 to 2020, the provincial authorities will focus on infrastructure development for better transportation. Lao Cai has proposed to develop a cross-border railway, which would stop at Sanai Station as soon as possible.
The Ministry of Transport is negotiating with China over the project.
Lao Cai’s authorities also urged the government to find investors and start a high-speed railway project that would connect Lao Cai with Hanoi and Haiphong.
This railway would then connect to Hekou Station in China.
The railway is designed to meet the rising demand for transport links between China's Kunming to Vietnam's Lao Cai, Hanoi, Haiphong and Quang Ninh.
Last year, the Noi Bai-Lao Cai Highway was opened to traffic and connected with Hekou-Kunming Highway to boost Vietnam's aqua-products and agriculture exports.
The highway has two lanes with speed limits of 80 kph. The provincial authorities propose to increase capacity and improve traffic safety.
