HCM City authorities have submitted to the Prime Minister a statement on the plan to build the Can Gio International Transshipment Port.
The port is expected to be located on the Con Cho Isle area, isolated from neighboring areas, which can be connected with the East Sea via the Vung Tau - Thi Vai passage and will be an important maritime channel of the eastern part of the southern region.
The municipal authorities said that the international port will be built in a modern way, while smart technologies and automation will be applied in the management and operation of the port.
Can Gio is planned to turn into an international transshipment center, which will attract shipping firms, goods owners, domestic and foreign logistics firms to join the world’s transport supply chains.
The city plans to implement investment, construction and exploitation of the port in Phase 1 prior to 2030 (two out of seven major wharves). In Phase 2 (from after 2030 to 2045), the remaining wharves will be completed.
The local authorities believe that the attention of the world’s large shipping firms and their investments will determine the success of the development of any international transshipment port.
While drafting the port development plan, MSC, the world’s largest shipping firm, has expressed its willingness to invest in the port. It is joining forces with Vietnamese enterprises to research and plan the investment in the port.
HCM City authorities say that the presence of such a large shipping firm offers favorable conditions to develop a transshipment port, and attract major investors with source technologies and modern management skills from developed countries, as well as huge investment capital to develop modern port infrastructure.
Once becoming operational, Can Gio Port will generate 6,000-8,000 jobs at the port, and tens of thousands of indirect jobs in the logistics sector and non-tariff area. It is expected that total taxes and fees the state can collect from the activities of the port and enterprises will be VND34-40 trillion a year.
In addition, the development of Can Gio Port will facilitate the development of domestic shipping firms, renovation of enterprises, and logistics activities, thus contributing to socio-economic development.
