Lieutenant General Le Quang Dao has extensive experience, having served for many years at the Border Guard Command in Lang Son province.

In January 2020, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Vietnam Border Guard. Eight months later, he assumed the position of Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Border Guard Force.

In October 2021, he was transferred and appointed as Commander of the Vietnam Coast Guard.

The General Staff is the commanding and operational body of the Vietnam People's Army and the militia forces. It is responsible for organizing and directing the development of these forces and commanding military operations.

The General Staff includes the Chief of the General Staff, Deputy Chiefs, and various functional departments overseeing combat operations, training, military personnel, and more.

The Chief of the General Staff, who concurrently serves as Deputy Minister of National Defense, acts on behalf of the Minister of National Defense in managing the Ministry’s operations when the minister is absent.

This role also involves directing subordinate agencies and units to build military strategies, develop national defense plans, and coordinate, guide, inspect, and supervise ministries, equivalent agencies, and local People's Committees in implementing national defense laws. It includes ensuring compliance with military discipline, national laws, and directives from the Minister of National Defense.

The current Chief of the General Staff is General Nguyen Tan Cuong, who also serves as Deputy Minister of National Defense.
