Top Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem has risen four places, from No 33 to No 29, in FIDE’s world rankings for April.

His Elo rating also jumped from 2712 to 2726, the best Elo rating in Vietnamese chess history. (The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in competitor-versus-competitor games such as chess).

Liem won the international chess tournament, HD Bank 2017, held in HCM City and the College Final Four held in the US.

His career best ranking was No 27 in April of 2013.

Other Vietnamese representatives Nguyen Ngoc Truong Sơn and Tran Tuan Minh ranked 149th and 524th in the world, with Elo ratings of 2623 and 2534, respectively.

Nguyen Quoc Huy has won a gold medal at the Asian Youth Chess Championship, which has opened in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, in the boys under 12 rapid and blitz.

At the event, which runs March 31-Arpil 10, Huy’s teammates have also racked up three silver and two bronze medals in the U14, U18 and U8 categories. 

This year, Vietnam fielded a team of 27 players at the tourney.
