Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recently signed the decision appointing Lieutenant General Le Van Huong, currently Director of the Military Personnel Department under the General Staff, to the position of Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army.
The General Staff functions as the command and operational body for both the Vietnam People’s Army and the militia forces. It oversees the development, coordination, and operational activities of these military entities.
The General Staff comprises the Chief of the General Staff, deputy chiefs, and functional departments responsible for combat operations, training, personnel, and more.
The Chief of the General Staff also serves as Deputy Minister of National Defense and acts on behalf of the Minister in managing the Ministry of National Defense when the Minister is absent.
The Chief is responsible for directing subordinate agencies and units within the General Staff in building military strategies and national defense plans. He leads efforts to coordinate, guide, supervise, and ensure implementation of defense laws by ministries, government bodies, and provincial authorities. He also inspects and enforces military discipline, state laws, and directives issued by the Minister of National Defense.
The current Chief of the General Staff is General Nguyen Tan Cuong, who also holds the position of Deputy Minister of National Defense.
