Lo Lo Chai Village, about 1km from Lung Cu flagpole in Dong Van District of Ha Giang Province was recognized as a Cultural and Tourism Village in 2022. This place is considered a fairy land thanks to its beautiful natural scenery.
People living in Lo Lo Chai today are mainly Lo Lo and H'Mong people.
Traditional earthen walls, tiled roofs, small yards, steep slopes... are the characteristics of this tourist destination. Currently, accommodation services for one person in a community house range from 100,000-180,000 VND, and 300,000 - 1 million VND/ private room.
Since switching to the experiential tourism business model, the lives of families in Lo Lo Chai have changed positively. In the past, they mainly worked in the fields, but now they do tourism business and have a stable income.
Mr. Diu Di Thue runs a homestay business in Lo Lo Chai Village. He said, at the end of 2019, after being encouraged and provided 60 million VND per family to change economic methods by the local authorities, his family began offering tourism services.
"At first I was very confused because I didn't know if I would be able to make money from this. Then the Covid-19 pandemic came, tourism stagnated, there were very few visitors, and my family returned to farming and raising livestock. In the past one year, my family has completely switched to doing tourism services, renting out rooms, selling food and drinks to tourists. Since then, my family's economy has been stable. My children are all studying at boarding schools in the province," Thue said.
Thue’s wife said that the tourist season is from around October to March next year. During this time, her family's revenue is about 50 million VND/month. The family has built a house next door to live in. "The old house is for rent. Tourism here is still seasonal. Summer often has a lot of rain and few visitors. Accommodation services in Lo Lo Chai are mainly popular in winter and spring," the couple said.
Since being recognized as a Cultural Tourism Village, the village has become very popular. Visitors to Lo Lo Chai are mainly in groups or "backpackers" who like to travel and experience.
Thu Uyen, a woman from Ho Chi Minh City who came to Ha Giang for the first time, said: "Lo Lo Chai has a very pleasant and cold atmosphere like Da Lat, but in terms of architecture and services, it is rich in national culture so I really like it. I will definitely come here again."
Visitors to Lo Lo Chai often stay 1-2 nights to experience ethnic cultural life. Every Friday and Saturday night or on holidays, the homestay service in this village is often full. Those who do not book rooms in advance have to return to Dong Van and Meo Vac to find a place to stay overnight.
Ms. Vang Thi Huong has been working at a coffee shop in Lo Lo Chai village for nearly two months now. Previously, in addition to working in the fields, she stayed at home to weave cloth, sometimes went to the forest or did some other manual work to increase her income. "Working in a coffee shop is better than working in the forest or on the fields, while my income is stable," Ms. Huong said.
After finishing high school, Vang Thi Uyen also applied to work at a store in Lo Lo Chai village. She works there like an accountant. "I feel lucky to have a job. I often see my parents and grandparents working in the fields very hard," Uyen said.
Lo Lo Chai village has 114 households, with 29 offering tourism services. Homestays are arranged in a traditional style: The toilet system, drinking table, and common living space are spaciously arranged. Ancient artifacts of the Lo Lo people are also displayed in the rooms, creating intimacy and friendliness.
