In 2016, about 214 party members saw their membership lapse. Because of low salaries and bonuses, they have to find jobs far away and were unable to participate in regular activities in the province for over three months.

281 cadres, mostly in Nga Bay Commune resigned. Nguyen Van Son, vice chairman of the Nga Bay Commune Vietnam Fatherland Front, said 35 staff had resigned and three of them are part-time vice chairmen.

A part-time vice chairman and chairwoman in Tan Thanh Commune also tendered their resignation.

Huynh Hoang Anh, chairman of Tan Thanh Commune Vietnam Fatherland Front, said Bui Thi Tuyet Nga and Nguyen Van Linh had worked hard for many years but their salaries were only over VND1.23m (USD54) a month.

"They can't live on their wages so we need to find other jobs to support their families," Anh said.

Nguyen Thi Tuyet Van, vice chairwoman of Phung Hiep District Vietnam Fatherland Front, said two part-time communal vice chairmen and three heads of the task forces in Long Thanh and Hiep Hung communes had resigned.

"Compared to other officials, the bonuses for the employees at Vietnam Fatherland Front agencies are a bit better but it's not enough. Most of the people that resigned are party members and have bachelor degrees," Van said. "We tried to encourage them to no avail."

Van said the government should give more support to agencies as they were participating in various movements in many fields but they don't have their own funding. Phung Hiep District Vietnam Fatherland Front is trying to hire another staff member but the monthly wage they can offer is only VND1m (USD44).

22 Vietnam Fatherland Front vice chairs in Vi Thanh City quit because of low pay. Many police officers in the communes of Hau Giang Province also want to quit as they only receive support of VND700,000 (USD30) a month.
