Vietnam is striving for low-carbon agriculture production

The report from the Low-carbon Agriculture Support Project on the use of high technologies in agricultural production noted the use of biogas electricity generators at large farms which consume over VND30 million a month worth of electricity.

The biogas electricity generator used by Tran Thi Tuyet in BInh Dinh province, after one year of operation, created 100,000 Kwh of electricity in rush hours, valued at VND280 million. Farmers save hundreds of million of dong because they do not have to buy standby diesel power generators.

Meanwhile, the new pig farming model has helped farmers’ income increase by VND600,000 per pig in trial farming models in the provinces of Bac Giang and Phu Tho. 

The outstanding advantage of the model is that it doesn’t discharge livestock waste water to the environment. Using after-biogas waste water to irrigate crops also helped save 70-100 percent of costs on fertilizer.

In some localities, farmers can get financial support from local authorities to equip their farms with livestock waste separators. 

The machines allow farmers to take full advantage of tons of compost. As such, with the price of VND800,000-1 million per ton, farmers can have additional income of tens of million of dong a month thanks to the technology.

With the machines, pollution can be reduced. This has prompted local farmers to scale up their farming. Tran Nghe Tinh in Cam Thang commune of Ha Tinh province has raised his herd of pigs from 3,000 to 7,000, while Pham Cong in Chau Thanh district of Soc Trang has increased his farm by two times. 

The success of the new agricultural production model has influenced local management policies. 

The Ha Tinh provincial People’s Council has suggested supporting 70 percent of equipment cost for the farmers who want to buy livestock waste separators. The equipment is one of the requirements set by the local authorities.

According to Nguyen The Hinh, director of the low-carbon agriculture production project, the aim of the project is to encourage the manufacture of organic fertilizer and bioenergy and other activities that can bring profits.

Hinh said that the low-carbon agriculture production models have brought great benefits. They help reduce pollution, change farmers’ behaviors, provide fertilizer for crops, and increase farmers’ incomes.

The success will provide a foundation to build a master livestock waste management program which will reduce the volume of water used in farming, mitigating pollution risks.
