Vietnam's Ly Hoang Nam went through to the quarter-finals of the India F3 Futures tennis tournament after his opponent withdrew yesterday in Jassowal City.

The unseeded Vietnamese won the first set against No 5 seed Sidharth Rawat 6-3 before the Indian retired in the second set.

The match lasted only 23 minutes.

Nam will next meet first seeded Vishnu Vardhan, another Indian, who beat Japanese Yuichi Ito 7-6, 7-6.

The event will close on Sunday with US$10,000 up for grabs.

Bình Dương 1 wins first match of tennis championship

Bình Dương 1 defeated Hà Nội 2 2-0 in the first match of the National Tennis Team Championship’s men’s category in Đắk Nông Province yesterday.

Vũ Atem won 6-4, 6-1 over Vũ Hà Minh Đức before David Nguyễn beat Nguyễn Hoàng Minh 6-0, 6-3 in the singles matches.

Bình Dương 1 will next play the Police who defeated Kiên Giang 2-0.

Military 2 also won 2-0 over HCM City.

On the women’s side, Kiên Giang 1 beat Hà Nội 3-0 and Kiên Giang 2 lost 0-3 to Đà Nẵng.

Hà Nội will play HCM City 1 while Kiên Giang 2 meet HCM City 2 today.

The annual tournament features 12 men’s and six women’s squads.

The finals are on May 16.

Tùng jumps to top of cycling tour after strong finish

Title favourite Huỳnh Thanh Tùng secured the yellow jersey of the Hạt Ngọc Trời Cycling Cup after the third stage yesterday.

Tùng of Military Zone 7 came second at the 42km stage around Cao Lĩnh City in Đồng Tháp Province after Phan Hoàng Thái of Domesco Đồng Tháp who clocked 52.09min. Nguyễn Phạm Quốc Khang of Vĩnh Long finished third.

However, it was enough for him to take the overall top position with a total time of 3:12.46. Thái and Nguyễn Hoàng Giang of An Giang were his closest competitors.

Tùng also kept the green jersey for best sprinter with 26 points.

Military Zone 7 took the lead in the team event. Domesco Đồng Tháp and Vĩnh Long are second and third, respectively.

In the amateur category, Nguyễn Nam Cực of Cà Mau Fertilisers is the leading cyclist and his team dominates the ranking.

Today, athletes will tour from Cao Lãnh to Vĩnh Hưng District in Long An Province for a total of 113km.
