Ly Hoang Nam has defeated Yu Cheng-yu of Chinese Taipei in a head to head match in the main round of the Kofu International Open Tennis men’s singles in Japan.

Nam lost the first set 4-6 but came back to win the second set 6-5.

In the third set, Nam, ranked 884th, successful beat his opponent, who is ranked 117 spots higher than him, 2-1 after nearly 3 hours of competition.

Earlier, Nam defeated, Japan’s Yuichi Ito, ranked World No 848, 6-2, 7-6 for a berth in the main round.

The winner of the tournament will receive prize money of US$10,000. The final is set for March 27.

HCM City triumph at national swimming event

HCM City took the lead at the National Short Course Swimming Championships in Hue yesterday.

After four days of competing, the team won a total of 26 golds, six silvers and nine bronzes. Of these, Nguyen Diep Phuong Tram won gold medals in the women’s 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

Da Nang came in second with five golds, one silver and one bronze. Long An finished third with two golds, eight silvers and six bronzes.

The event, which attracted 110 participants from 18 teams competing for 45 sets of medals, ends today.
