Most of the families on the island earn their living from garlic and onions. August is the time for harvesting onions, which were planted three months ago. After harvesting onions, farmers begin working the soil to prepare for the next crop. Purple onions bring about high income for local people. On average, farmers harvest about 6 tons of onions per hectare and sell onions for VND20,000/kg ($1.9).Many children in the summer harvest onions with their parents. Like garlic, onion is a specialty of Ly Son. Ly Son onions have a special fragrance. There are about 130 hectares of purple onions on Ly Son Island. Garlic and onion fields are also favorite sites for tourists to take photos. |
