A man in the central province of Quang Nam has been asked to pay tax arrears after he was found to have earned USD727,000 from Google, however, he has not yet paid the required taxes.

The headquarter of Quang Nam Province's Department of Taxation

HCM City Department of Taxation has asked the central province of Quang Nam’s Taxation Department to work on collecting the tax arrears from the man who lived in HCM City at some point.

According to the HCM City Department of Taxation, the man earned USD727,000 from Google between 2014 and 2017 but did not conform to his tax duties. He has been requested to work with the department many times, but he left his home in the city, so the department has asked Quang Nam Taxation Department to co-operate to settle the case.

If the taxation authorities can’t contact him, they will inform his relatives of his violation.

The HCM City Taxation Department earlier collected VND4.1 billion (USD164,000) in tax arrears and fines from a local man that earned VND41 billion (USD1.6 million) from Facebook and Google ads. He is a programmer whose game was viewed and downloaded on Facebook, Google and YouTube. He earned over VND41 billion from ads in 2016 and 2017 but didn't make any declarations or pay taxes.

Under the Law on Tax Administration, all businesspeople, including those who do business online such as through Facebook, Google or YouTube, have to pay taxes.

For online business activities which earn from VND100 million (USD4,545) per year, owners are required to pay the taxes which account for 7% of this income.
