Vietnam created a seismic event at the ongoing Futsal World Cup in Colombia on September 11 as they performed beyond expectation, trouncing Guatemala 4-2 in the opener of Group C.
As World Cup newbies, Vietnamese players were under no pressure and played comfortably against three-time World Cup participants Guatemala.
Minh Tri was the man of the match, contributing a hattrick to Vietnam’s four-goal tally, with one in the first half and two in the latter twenty minutes.
The remaining goal was scored by Tran Van Vu, who successfully converted a late penalty into a fourth, winning goal for Vietnam.
Alongside Minh Tri, goalkeeper Ngo Dinh Thuan was also praiseworthy for his exceptional performance during the match.
Thuan saved numerous shots from the Guatemalan side, only allowing his Central American opponents to pull back two goals, despite their concerted efforts.
The opening victory helped Vietnam join Italy on top of Group C with three points each. Two-time World Cup bronze medallists Italy also defeated Paraguay by the same score in another match later the same day.
The 2016 Futsal World Cup is taking place from September 10 to October 1, featuring six groups of four teams.
