Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen has advised the public to remain calm in response to the HMPV flu virus reported in China while emphasizing the importance of adhering to preventive measures against respiratory infections.
Understanding the situation
At a government press briefing on January 8, the media raised concerns about the HMPV virus, which causes respiratory infections and has garnered significant public attention.
Deputy Minister Do Xuan Tuyen explained that recent surveillance data from December 23–29, 2024, by China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention identified HMPV as the primary cause of recent respiratory infections.
On January 4, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the respiratory infections were seasonal and not indicative of a public health emergency. The country's healthcare system remains stable, with lower hospital utilization rates than the same period last year.
HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets from sneezing, coughing, or close contact, and its symptoms resemble the common cold, including fever, coughing, and nasal congestion. It can lead to complications such as pneumonia or bronchitis, particularly in vulnerable groups such as children under five, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Preventive measures emphasized
The World Health Organization (WHO) has characterized these infections as seasonal respiratory diseases common during winter in temperate climates. The organization has not recommended travel or trade restrictions related to these respiratory infections.
In Vietnam, the Ministry of Health has activated its surveillance systems to monitor the situation closely and shares data with international health organizations, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As Vietnam enters the winter-spring period, which is favorable for respiratory viruses, the Ministry of Health has issued guidelines urging citizens to adopt preventive measures, particularly those at higher risk.
Key recommendations include:
Regularly following official health updates to avoid misinformation.
Implementing basic hygiene practices, such as hand washing and wearing masks.
Seeking medical attention at healthcare facilities if symptoms arise for early detection and treatment.
Deputy Minister Do Xuan Tuyen also called on media outlets to work with the Ministry of Health and the General Department of Preventive Medicine to provide accurate information to the public.
He stressed the need to strike a balance between raising awareness and avoiding undue panic, ensuring the public stays informed and proactive in preventing the spread of respiratory illnesses.
