According to the ministry, the mud came from dredging around Quy Nhon Port to receive 50,000DWT (deadweight tonnage) ships.
The ministry said that the dumping area of 100 hectares in Quy Nhon City had already been approved by the Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee in 2022. It lies some 17 kilometres from Quy Nhon Port.
The ministry has asked the Vietnam Maritime Administration and Quy Nhon Port to investigate and evaluate the effects of dumping on sea transportation in the area.
Earlier in 2019, Binh Dinh authorities turned down the proposal to dump 300,000 cubic metres of waste mud from the same dredging project into the sea due to environmental concerns. The mud was used for infill for an ecological tourism construction project in Thi Nai Lagoon.
