Vietnam's online music industry could have a yearly value of thousands of billions of VND if it is protected and exploited.

The Music Copyrights Management Online Joint Stock Company (MCM Online) launched an ecosystem on February 22 as part of efforts to protect music copyright on the internet, the first of its kind in Vietnam.

Vietnamese singers may face copyright problems if they sing exclusive songs belonging to other singers, but it appears to be ‘safer’ when they sing international songs.

The rights to music by composer Nguyen Van Chung have been brought by Chinese artists, with the intention of re-recording and releasing them north of the border. 

In recent years, Vietnamese music lovers have witnessed the birth of many works combining traditional and modern music.

Better enforcement of the laws covering music copyright protection is needed to ensure the development of the Vietnamese music industry in the digital era, speakers said at a recent seminar in HCM City.
