On August 26, during its 8th extraordinary session, the National Assembly made two significant appointments in Vietnam's judicial system, electing Le Minh Tri as the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court and Nguyen Huy Tien as the Chief Procurator of the Supreme People's Procuracy.
Le Minh Tri was elected as the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court, succeeding Nguyen Hoa Binh. The election was conducted through a secret ballot, and the National Assembly unanimously approved the resolution, with all 438 attending deputies voting in favor of his appointment.
Following the election, Le Minh Tri took the oath of office, pledging loyalty to the Fatherland, the people, and the Constitution. He vowed to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to him by the Party, the State, and the people.
As the highest judicial authority in Vietnam, the Supreme People's Court plays a critical role in ensuring the independence and fairness of the judiciary. The Chief Justice oversees the court's activities, presides over meetings of the Judicial Council, reviews cases through cassation and reopening procedures, and has the authority to propose clemency in death penalty cases to the President.
Le Minh Tri, born in 1960 in Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City, holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Security. He has a long and distinguished career in Ho Chi Minh City, including roles in the city's police force and administrative offices. In April 2016, he was elected as the Procurator General of the Supreme People's Procuracy, a position he held until his recent election as Chief Justice.
In a subsequent election during the same session, Nguyen Huy Tien was elected as the Chief Procurator of the Supreme People's Procuracy, succeeding Le Minh Tri. The election received unanimous support, with all 439 attending deputies voting in favor of his appointment.
The Supreme People's Procuracy of Vietnam is responsible for public prosecution and judicial oversight, ensuring the protection of the Constitution, the law, human rights, and citizens' rights. The Chief Procurator plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of Vietnam's legal system.
Nguyen Huy Tien, previously the First Deputy Chief Procurator, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His appointment aligns with the National Assembly's efforts to strengthen Vietnam's judicial institutions and uphold the rule of law.
