Nghia made the request at a session when NA deputies discussed the draft Law on Citizen Identification as the deputy from HCMC explained the agenda for the NA’s remaining days does not include any part on the East Sea issues.

Nghia urged the NA to issue a resolution on the East Sea situation given China’s violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty and sovereign rights.

Early last month China illegally deployed a giant oil rig and a large number of escort ships inside Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf as defined by the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This unilateral act has posed a serious threat to Vietnam’s sovereignty and security.

“On behalf of the Vietnamese people, the NA should issue a resolution on the East Sea,” Nghia said and clarified that the resolution will let the world know Vietnam’s legitimate stance and condemn China’s wrongful acts in the East Sea.

The resolution will allow Government agencies to take all appropriate measures in line with international law to defend national sovereignty, including bringing China to an international arbitration over its use of force to occupy Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) islands.

“I do hope that the Party, the NA and the State will consider and approve my request. We can ask for opinions of other deputies if necessary,” Nghia said when news broke that China is towing one more oil rig into the East Sea.

During Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi’s visit to Hanoi, the Chinese media was keeping slandering Vietnam and its ships were continuing ramming Vietnam’s fisheries control boats within Vietnamese waters. These acts showed China’s words are quite different from its deeds, Nghia said.
