The Department of Broadcasting, Television, and Electronic Information (Ministry of Information and Communications) recently identified that Netflix’s offerings included numerous programs classified as television shows and reality series.
These programs covered topics like sports, cuisine, travel, weddings, and relationships. Examples include Love on the Spectrum, Down For Love, Love on the Spectrum Australia, and Longest Third Date.
Netflix’s service operates as a platform for film distribution via the internet and is subject to Vietnam's cinematic regulations.
Under these rules, all films provided must be classified and reported to the relevant state management authorities.
To ensure compliance with laws governing broadcasting, television, and service provision, the Department issued an official request on December 12, 2024, requiring Netflix to remove all content classified as television programming.
Subsequently, the Department held meetings to clarify legal requirements in the broadcasting and television services sector and address concerns raised by Netflix.
Netflix has since adhered to these directives, removing television content and aligning its offerings with regulatory expectations.
The company has committed that, from December 23, 2024, its Vietnam service will only distribute films in accordance with the country's cinematic laws.
