Ho Chi Minh City is preparing to activate a new wave of strategic infrastructure developments worth more than VND 260 trillion, including the Can Gio - Vung Tau sea-crossing route, the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway and the Ho Tram - Long Thanh expressway.

Building on momentum from 10 landmark projects launched earlier this year, the city is accelerating preparations for a series of major developments ahead of the July 2 milestone marking the 50th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh City.

With a combined investment of more than VND 260 trillion, or roughly USD 10 billion, eight large-scale infrastructure and cultural projects are expected to open new development space for the southern megacity between 2028 and 2030.

The Can Gio - Vung Tau sea-crossing project will stretch 14 kilometers, beginning at Bien Dong 2 Road in Can Gio Commune and ending at the Sao Mai - Ben Dinh interchange in Vung Tau.

The project is expected to cost more than VND 92.663 trillion under a public-private partnership model and will include three main components: an underwater tunnel, a sea bridge and connecting roads at both ends.

Its centerpiece will be a 3.9-kilometer sea tunnel, including around 3 kilometers of immersed tunnel sections beneath the seabed.

Two artificial islands will be built to connect the tunnel and bridge sections.

The sea bridge portion will span more than 8 kilometers and feature a 150-meter shipping clearance to accommodate international vessels traveling through Ganh Rai Bay.

Scheduled for completion in 2029, the project is expected to create a direct connection between Can Gio and Vung Tau, reducing travel time to around 10 minutes and supporting marine economic development in the region.

The Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway project carries an estimated investment of around VND 84.7 trillion.

Planned as a modern 38-kilometer light rail line, it will connect the Thu Thiem urban area with Long Thanh International Airport.

The route is expected to become a strategic transport corridor, cutting travel time between Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh Airport to under 20 minutes.

The railway is also expected to improve regional transport integration, ease pressure on road infrastructure and stimulate urban and real estate development along the corridor.

The Ho Tram - Long Thanh Airport expressway is expected to require approximately VND 51 trillion in investment.

The 42-kilometer route will feature eight lanes and is designed to directly connect Long Thanh Airport with the Ho Tram - Binh Chau tourism area.

One of the project’s key features is an elevated bridge system crossing protected natural areas to help minimize environmental impacts.

Once completed, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time from around two hours to just 50 minutes while strengthening transport, logistics and tourism connectivity in southeastern Vietnam.

Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, with an estimated investment of around VND 6 trillion, is expected to become one of Ho Chi Minh City’s future architectural landmarks.

The bridge will extend approximately 2.2 kilometers and include six traffic lanes linking southern Ho Chi Minh City with the Thu Thiem New Urban Area.

The design proposal draws inspiration from the image of “Vietnamese bamboo,” creating a visual highlight along the Saigon River landscape corridor.

One notable feature under consideration is a movable main span capable of lifting and lowering to allow large vessels to enter the city center without disrupting road traffic.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to reduce congestion along southern and eastern traffic corridors while improving regional connectivity.

The Binh Tien bridge-road project is expected to require around VND 6.2 trillion in investment.

The 3.6-kilometer route is intended to improve traffic connections between southwestern districts and central Ho Chi Minh City.

The project will cross Tau Hu Canal and Doi Canal, creating a radial transport corridor linked to Nguyen Van Linh Boulevard and southern Saigon.

Authorities expect the route to help ease traffic pressure, improve urban infrastructure in the southwestern area and strengthen transport links with the Mekong Delta provinces.

The Cat Lai - Phu Huu port connection road project carries an estimated investment of more than VND 8.7 trillion.

The approximately 6-kilometer route will have a planned width of 60 meters with 12 traffic lanes dedicated primarily to cargo transportation.

The road is intended to connect the Cat Lai and Phu Huu port system with key transport arteries.

The project is expected to separate container truck traffic from residential neighborhoods in eastern Ho Chi Minh City, reducing congestion and traffic accident risks.

Authorities also expect the route to improve port operations, shorten cargo transport times and strengthen the city’s logistics and import-export capacity.

The Ben Nha Rong - Khanh Hoi Cultural Park project is planned on a nearly 40-hectare site in Khanh Hoi Ward with an estimated investment of around VND 20 trillion.

The development aims to transform former warehouse areas into a riverside cultural and public complex featuring a central square, underground spaces and community-oriented amenities.

The project is expected to become a new landmark along the Saigon River waterfront while expanding public space, strengthening riverfront connectivity and preserving the historical value of the Ben Nha Rong area as Ho Chi Minh City continues its urban modernization.
