Northern Vietnam is preparing for another wave of cold air, with temperatures expected to drop to 13°C in Hanoi and below 10°C in mountainous areas during the New Year period.
Consecutive cold air waves
According to the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center, stable cold air will weaken slightly before intensifying again around December 31 and January 2, 2025.
The national meteorological agency forecasts that northern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa will experience dry, sunny days, and cold nights.
From the evening of December 30, isolated rain is expected in some areas, with increasingly cold conditions, especially in the mountains, where severe cold spells are likely.

From December 31 to January 3, weak cold air will strengthen initially, followed by stronger intensifications.
Although back-to-back waves of cold air are expected, the weather will remain predominantly dry, with daytime temperatures in the northern region ranging between 20–24°C.
At night, temperatures could drop significantly, with mountainous areas reaching as low as 10°C.

Northern and North Central regions: Isolated light rain, morning fog in some areas, and sunny afternoons. Nighttime temperatures will range from 10–13°C in the mountains, 13–16°C in the plains, and daytime temperatures will hover around 22–25°C.
Hanoi: Morning fog, sunny days with highs of 23–25°C and nighttime lows of 13–15°C.
Central and South Central regions: Scattered showers and thunderstorms from December 31 to January 5, with localized heavy rainfall in some areas. The northern parts of this region will also feel cooler temperatures.
Central Highlands and Southern regions: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, particularly from January 2–4. Thunderstorms may bring whirlwinds, lightning, and strong winds.
