Apple is expected to officially unveil the iPhone 18 Pro Max this September, maintaining its traditional launch schedule for premium iPhone models.
While the iPhone 17 Pro Max remains one of the most capable smartphones on the market, recent leaks suggest Apple is preparing a range of notable enhancements for its successor.
From an entirely new processor and upgraded camera system to a larger battery and refinements in design and display technology, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could become one of Apple’s most compelling upgrades in years.
Here are the nine biggest differences currently rumored between the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
A20 Pro 2nm chip: A major leap in processing power
The most significant upgrade is expected to come from the new-generation A20 Pro processor.
According to reports, the chip will be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2nm process, replacing the 3nm technology used for the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Apple is also rumored to adopt wafer-level multi-chip module packaging technology, allowing RAM to be integrated directly into the chip architecture.
This approach could improve data transfer speeds, reduce latency and increase power efficiency.
As a result, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to deliver faster AI processing, enhanced gaming performance and cooler operating temperatures.
New 48MP camera with variable aperture
Photography is expected to be another major focus of Apple’s upgrades this year.
Leaks suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a completely new 48MP primary sensor developed in collaboration with Samsung.
The most notable addition could be variable aperture technology, making its debut on an iPhone.
Unlike the fixed aperture system found on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the new camera would automatically adjust lens opening based on shooting conditions.
This could provide better light control, improved low-light performance and more natural background blur in portrait photography.
The telephoto lens is also rumored to feature a wider aperture to improve zoom photography in low-light environments.
A smaller Dynamic Island
After several years of minimal design changes, Apple is reportedly planning to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
This may be achieved through optimization or relocation of certain Face ID components.
Although the change may be modest, it would increase usable screen space and give the front of the device a cleaner, more modern appearance.
An even larger camera module
While the front may become more streamlined, the rear camera system is expected to become more prominent.
According to leaked CAD renders, the camera module on the iPhone 18 Pro Max could measure approximately 11.54mm thick, up slightly from 11.23mm on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The overall camera area may reach a thickness of around 13.77mm.
The increase is likely due to larger sensors and more advanced optics designed to improve image quality.
RAM increased to 16GB
One of the most anticipated upgrades is memory capacity.
Several sources claim Apple will increase RAM from 12GB on the iPhone 17 Pro Max to 16GB on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The additional memory would benefit multitasking, AI processing and graphics-intensive gaming.
It would also support Apple’s growing focus on artificial intelligence features within iOS.
Larger battery and longer endurance
Battery capacity is expected to increase once again.
To accommodate a larger battery, the device may become slightly thicker at around 8.8mm.
The weight could also exceed 240g, compared with approximately 231g for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Although heavier, users would likely benefit from longer battery life, particularly when using AI-powered applications or recording high-quality video.
A refreshed color palette featuring Dark Cherry
Apple is also expected to introduce new color options for the Pro Max lineup.
The traditional silver finish will likely remain available.
Deep Blue may be replaced by Sky Blue, similar to shades seen on other Apple products.
Meanwhile, a new Dark Grey option is rumored, while the current Cosmic Orange could give way to Dark Cherry - a deep wine-red finish designed to deliver a more premium and sophisticated look.
Apple’s C2 modem replaces Qualcomm
The iPhone 17 Pro Max uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem for cellular connectivity.
However, Apple is reportedly continuing its efforts to reduce dependence on external suppliers by equipping the iPhone 18 Pro Max with its own C2 modem.
The C2 is expected to succeed the C1 modem first introduced in the iPhone 16e.
If the leaks prove accurate, the new modem could provide more stable connectivity, improved power efficiency and deeper hardware integration within Apple’s ecosystem.
Nearly 7-inch display with next-generation LTPO+
The final major upgrade is expected to be the display.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to feature a screen approaching 7 inches in size, slightly larger than the 6.9-inch panel on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Apple is also expected to introduce next-generation LTPO+ technology.
This could deliver more efficient adaptive refresh rates, lower power consumption and smoother overall performance.
Focused on performance, AI and photography
Overall, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is not expected to be a radical redesign, but rather a device packed with meaningful, practical improvements.
From the A20 Pro 2nm chip and variable-aperture camera system to 16GB of RAM, a larger battery, the C2 modem and an upgraded display, Apple appears to be focusing heavily on performance, artificial intelligence and photography.
If current rumors prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could establish a significant lead over the iPhone 17 Pro Max while further strengthening Apple’s position in the global premium smartphone market.
