The People's Committee of Nam Hoa Lu Ward in Ninh Binh province has established a task force to inspect and address violations involving foreign-language signs and advertisements across the locality.

The task force is responsible for developing an inspection plan and checking whether organizations, businesses and individuals comply with legal requirements governing the installation, wording and placement of commercial signs and advertising boards.

Many service businesses in Tam Coc display signs and advertisements in foreign languages.

The Tam Coc - Bich Dong tourist area, often described as Ninh Binh's "Western Quarter," has become a particular focus of the inspections.

In recent years, numerous accommodation providers and tourism businesses in the area have independently adopted foreign-language names and signs or used terminology that does not comply with Vietnamese regulations.

According to local authorities, these practices can confuse tourists and create difficulties for state management.

Vietnamese must take priority on commercial signs

Hundreds of businesses along both sides of the roads in the Tam Coc - Bich Dong tourist area have independently adopted foreign-language names, signs and advertisements.

Nam Hoa Lu Ward authorities have instructed the task force to examine sign dimensions, mandatory business information and the languages used on commercial signs and advertisements.

Required information includes the business name, address and telephone number.

Under the regulations cited by local authorities, business names and signs must be displayed in Vietnamese.

Where foreign languages are also used, the foreign-language lettering must not exceed three-quarters of the size of the Vietnamese lettering and must appear below the Vietnamese text.

The inspections also cover the use of terms describing different types of tourist accommodation.

The area is known as Ninh Binh's "Western Quarter" because it attracts large numbers of international tourists for sightseeing and overnight stays.

Businesses may only use designations such as "Hotel," "Villa," "Homestay" or "Hostel" when they meet the relevant requirements for facilities, technical standards and services.

Authorities have also warned accommodation providers against using the word "star" or star symbols to imply an official accommodation rating without recognition from the competent state agency.

This restriction applies not only to physical signs but also to websites and online platforms, including Facebook, Booking.com and Agoda.

Businesses urged to remove non-compliant signs

Members of the Nam Hoa Lu Ward task force explain regulations and encourage businesses to correct non-compliant signs and advertisements.

Hundreds of businesses operate along the roads leading through the Tam Coc - Bich Dong tourist area, where foreign-language signs are common.

The destination attracts large numbers of international visitors who come to explore its natural attractions, stay in local accommodation and enjoy tourism services.

On October 23, the Nam Hoa Lu Ward task force visited numerous service businesses to explain the regulations and encourage owners to comply.

One business owner on Hanh Cung Street, whose establishment displayed a foreign-language advertising sign, said the inspections had helped clarify the legal requirements.

Local authorities are inspecting and addressing the use of foreign-language commercial signs and advertisements across the ward.

"After the task force explained and reminded me that the foreign-language wording on my signs and advertisements did not comply with regulations, I understood the issue," the owner said. "I have committed to voluntarily removing the signs and installing replacements that comply with the law."

Local authorities are continuing their inspections and handling cases involving foreign-language commercial signs and advertisements that fail to meet the applicable requirements.

The campaign aims to ensure consistent compliance with signage regulations while improving the management of tourism businesses in one of Ninh Binh's busiest visitor destinations.
