The city has a plan to build two extra terminals, T3 and T4, to ease pressure on the existing T1 and T2 terminals, and to upgrade infrastructure to serve 50-75 million passengers a year. It plans to seek private investment for the expansion.

Although Noi Bai is currently not as constantly crowded as Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport, it soon will be without further expansion to cater to an estimated 30-40 per cent increase in demand in the years to come, according to Hanoi Party Chief Hoang Trung Hai.

Designed for 25 million passengers a year, Noi Bai welcomed 20 million in 2016, up 20.5 per cent against 2015. Passengers in 2015 grew 21 per cent, according to figures from the airport.

Arrivals are expected to reach its designed capacity within the next three years and then double within less than 20 years.
